For high data band width, low power consumption, superior speed DDR2 memory should be preferably considered. As this next generation memory technology offer you special features like superior thermal stability with no change in dimensions but it is noteworthy that pin configuration of ddr2memory module is changed. The change in pin configuration saves power, as it requires 1.8V power supply instead of 2.5V required by ddr memory modules. Also two frequency ranges were offered for ddr2 memory modules in 2004 viz. 400MHz and 533MHz which further improved to 667MHZ. Such high data rate is due to the presence of I/O buffer between memory and data bus which increase the speed of data bus to twice of that of memory clock. In ddr2memory modules also, memory is stored in memory cells and these cells get activated by clock signals that synchronizes its working with external data bus like all other memory modules.
The lower clock frequency also offers power reductions in cases when high data rates are not required. But it is distinguished with the ddr memory due to the fact that it transfers four bits of data in a memory cycle, just because of the advantages ddr2 memory modules have now been an integrated part of almost all pc platforms by replacing the ddr memory. Also for maintaining signal integrity ddr2 memory modules are packaged in costly BGA packages overcoming the disadvantages of the TSSOP packages. Thus in a way for better signals DDR2 memory modules are the best choice.
